At Elegant Pairings, we’re always inspired by destinations that offer couples unique ways to connect and celebrate love. After a long and fulfilling wedding season, we sought a destination that would inspire, refresh, and reconnect us in the most magical way. Iceland, with its reputation as the “Land of Fire and Ice,” felt like the perfect choice.
This past November, we packed our bags, albeit somewhat poorly as Floridians (more on that later), and set off for an adventure that turned out to be as magical as it was awe-inspiring. From breathtaking landscapes to cozy, intimate moments, Iceland offers the kind of balance that makes it a dream destination for couples. Whether you’re looking to chase the northern lights, indulge in a luxurious spa, or explore glaciers and waterfalls, Iceland is a honeymoon spot that feels like it was designed for love and connection.
Even before we landed, the trip felt like an adventure. Icelandair’s Bid Up system let us submit a bid to upgrade from economy to first class. When our bid was accepted, it was like hitting the jackpot! The experience did not disappoint—craft gin, incredible food, and a spacious, relaxing flight made for the perfect overnight journey from Boston to Reykjavik.
Arriving in Reykjavik in the early hours of the morning, we were greeted by the Arctic chill—cue the realization that Floridians may need more than one puffer jacket to handle Iceland’s winter winds! After a brisk (and chilly) walk to the rental car area (take the shuttle if you can), we made our way to The Edition Reykjavik, a hotel we can’t stop raving about. Not only was it beautiful, but their team also got us into a room at 7:00 AM so we could rest before starting the day.
A quick nap later, we headed to the iconic Blue Lagoon, and it was everything we needed and more. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by lava fields was surreal. We splurged on an in-water massage and sipped cocktails while floating in the steamy pools. If you’re looking for a way to shake off travel fatigue and step into a state of bliss, this is it.
Back in Reykjavik, it was time to tackle the cold head-on. We visited all the outdoor stores to find the right gear for Iceland’s winter winds. From extra gloves and face shields to wind pants, we realized we needed a little bit of everything to keep warm. With our newly purchased gear in hand, we felt ready to take on the elements.
Once properly outfitted, we wrapped up our first day with dinner at Tides, where the food was as unforgettable as the views of the harbor.
The next day, we dove into Iceland’s charm. First up: an unforgettable horseback riding experience. Icelandic horses are a breed like no other—small, sweet, and perfectly suited for the rugged terrain. Riding through volcanic landscapes with snow-dusted hills in the distance was one of those pinch-me moments.
In the afternoon, we explored Reykjavik. Stops included the towering Hallgrímskirkja Church, vibrant Laugavegur Street, and Brauð & Co., where the pastries were so good we considered moving in. We ended the day with FlyOver Iceland, a virtual reality experience that gave us a bird’s-eye view of the country’s most beautiful spots.
On our way to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its diverse landscapes, we had our first encounter with the northern lights. Driving back to our cozy base at Dis Cottages, the inky black sky came alive with streaks of green light. It felt like magic—pure and simple—and was exactly what we’d hoped for on this trip.
No trip to Iceland would be complete without a drive along the Golden Circle, a route packed with geological marvels. Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, was both humbling and surreal. At Gullfoss Waterfall, the sheer power of the cascading water left us speechless, and the bubbling geysers at Strokkur were a reminder of Iceland’s volcanic roots.
We ended the day at the Ion Adventure Hotel, a remote, modern retreat that felt like a world away. Dinner at the nearby Ingólfsfjall Viking Restaurant added a touch of local flavor to an already incredible day.
The South Coast was a highlight for us. We explored the famous black sand beaches near Vik, with their towering basalt columns and dramatic waves, and visited waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Walking behind the cascading water at Seljalandsfoss, with the spray in the air, felt exhilarating.
Our stay at Umi Hotel added to the magic. Horses roamed just outside the door, creating a scene that felt straight out of a storybook. Walking hand in hand from the hotel to the black sand beaches, we were able to pet these beautiful creatures and make core memories together. Strolling through this serene landscape, with cliffs as our backdrop and the sound of the waves in the distance, was one of those quiet, unforgettable moments that make a trip truly special.
If you’re considering Iceland for your honeymoon, don’t miss the ice caves. Trekking through the crystal-blue caves at Skaftafell was like stepping into another world. Add in a glacier hike, and you’ve got the perfect mix of adventure and beauty.
Our nights at Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon were cozy and comfortable, with stunning views of the surrounding terrain.
Back in Reykjavik for our final night, we visited the Sky Lagoon. This luxurious spa features an infinity pool overlooking the ocean and a seven-step ritual that includes everything from a cold plunge (which I may or may not have skipped) to a scrub and steam. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our incredible journey.
We ended the night at Tides, the same restaurant where we began our journey. It felt fitting to bring everything full circle.
Our trip to Iceland was magical in so many ways, and even the moments of scrambling to add layers became part of the adventure. If you’re planning your own visit, we can’t recommend packing more layers than you think you’ll need—learning on the go certainly made it memorable, but we’re happy to pass that tip along!
Iceland is a place where contrasts come together beautifully. It’s wild and rugged, yet peaceful and serene. It’s a destination where you can explore glaciers by day and relax in geothermal lagoons by night.
At Elegant Pairings, we believe in helping couples create experiences that celebrate their love stories, and Iceland embodies everything we look for in a destination: unforgettable adventures, intimate moments, and a sense of wonder you’ll carry with you forever.
Whether it’s chasing the northern lights, savoring a quiet dinner in a charming restaurant, or strolling hand in hand through incredible landscapes, Iceland is more than a destination—it’s a memory waiting to be made.
Let's make magic happen on 30A, in Boston, on the shores of New England, or wherever your journey takes us!
